Together, we can keep books and the stories alive and out of landfills

I am a retired  Milwaukee Firefighter and  now living in Naples Florida since 2015. During my move I found a need to find a new home for many of my Books that would not make the journey to Florida. I want to share a short story with you. When I was an active Firefighter, one day I was working out at the MFD Academy, and as I was leaving the Fire Academy, I noticed some books in the dumpster. So I jumped in! ……. Yes I am a dumpster diver. 😂 I pulled as many books out of the dumpster that would fit in my pickup truck. These books were on their way to the landfill.😮 Not knowing what to do with the books I saved them for many years. Then Milwaukee Fire Department opened Old Engine 23 quarters and turned it into a Museum over 10 years ago.  So I donated the books, and many are on display today.  So last year November 2024 We created a Free Book Pickup Service , ( Give Books Naples ) The  plan is to Rehome as many books and media as we can. At Give Books Naples, we offer a free Book and Media  pickup service, we pickup your gently used books, CDs, and DVDs—right from your doorstep. Then we try to sell books and media to cover some of our cost and time. Some of the cost include storing the books in a comfort control storage unit, and we created a website, (givebooksnaples.com) both with monthly payments. And there are fees to sell books and media. And not to mention the cost of gas. We want to donate some of books to local schools, libraries, and community organizations. This will help reduce landfill waste, and support literacy.
